Post 2

The primary source is an article called “China, U.S. teach each other some lessons” written by Mitchell Landsberg in the Los Angeles Times on the April 08,2007. (http://articles.latimes.com/2007/apr/08/world/fg-school8)
It talks about the difference between Chinese and American education and explains the advantage and disadvantage of each education by interviewing some Chinese teachers and scholars. In this article, it also discussed that the educators in the United States want to learn the Chinese teaching method in Math and science. On the other hand, the government of China hope students can learn how to divergent thinking and have more innovative ideals. "In many ways, China and the United States represent the Yin and Yang of international education." Although these two education look like complementary, actually they can't integrate into the society because different core ideas between American and Chinese education. In the United States, it pays more attention to the students' feelings and makes students to excite their imaginations and inspire their minds. But for Chinese students, parents and teachers always regard the grades as the most important thing and parents hope their children to get the best high school or best universities. In my experience, maybe Chinese education teaches students as “exam machines”. So, I think it is the reason why more and more Chinese students choose to study aboard and do the things they really want to do instead of staying at school for 12 hours a day, taking continual classes, and doing excessive homework.

Who Belongs Where?

While I have a few primary source in mind, my first choice of analysis is the anime series Time of Eve. The series, as a whole, is only six episodes in length, but I will be focusing upon the first, 15-minute episode, entitled “Akiko.” Directed by Yasuhiro Yoshiura in 2008, Time of Eve, was originally aired over the timespan of a year, providing a strong emphasis to each individual episode and its associated story.

Essentially, Time of Eve takes place in a futuristic Japan, and androids have become so common place that a number of cultural dilemmas, regarding the relationship between humans and androids, have begun to arise. Although androids continue to faithfully follow the Three Laws of Robotics, the governmental Ethics Committee has begun to run public media describing the dangers of giving androids too much responsibility.

The Ethics Committee's campaigns, and certainly the series as a whole, are chocked full of interesting messages. One televised ad, for instance, visualizes a red, ripe tomato being picked by a mechanical hand. As the tomato is picked, a collection of small gears and wires protrude outward, followed by text displaying “Would you eat a tomato created by machines?” The first appearance of this ad is soon followed by scenes showing robots performing jobs that, in the present day, may be considered manual labor, performed by humans (for example, construction work). However, despite the apparent usefulness of androids in the Time of Eve, the news media are quite judgmental towards people who care too much about their robotic servants – calling such people “android-holics”.

These observations, however, are just a small selection of the material presented. I believe there are a large number of parallels which may be drawn, regarding realms varying from international labor and domestic products to the civil rights movements of various social classes.

Blog post #3

Primary source summary

The primary source that I have chosen to go in thoroughly, is an image that I found on the google search. The image was obtained by Filip Spagnoli and posted on google image on September 12, 2009. The image was taken to explain how much violence affect women. This image is very meaningful and well captured. A squeezed and wrinkled the paper of frame is shown and a reflection of a woman is what the image explains. From looking at the picture I can see that it is very detailed piece of art. The way it’s described is clear and shows artistic exposure. This image grabbed my attention and from looking at it, I feel like I can wonder beyond its manifestation. Black and gray color is the notable difference of the image. This can signify the sadness and fear that following the woman. Some part of the image is darker than the rest. Each section of the woman’s face and body is divided by the damaged and wrinkled paper. A squeezed and wrinkled paper of the frame shows a challenge that the woman is facing in her life. Looking at the image I can see that she is depressed. Her eyes are distorted and on the left edge of the frame there is deep cut. From viewing her eye, I can see that her future is dark. Her mouth is closed that signify her silence. why she is silent to her problem? What keep her silent?

Jet-son!!!!! You're FIRED!! Post#2

The Jetsons episode “Family Fallout” is a source that I might use...Every episode George Jetson gets fired and rehired by his boss Mr. Spacely. It’s interesting in the fact that George Jetson, whether he realizes it or not, has job security. Mr. Spacely knows that George Jetson is Trust worthy and loyal. Mr. Spacely is just hot-headed and greedy, so whenever he fires George he realizes that he’s really too important and valuable to let go. The Jetsons was produced and directed by William Hannah and Joseph Barbera in the early 60’s and then again in the early 80’s. It depicts an American lifestyle in the year 2062. A work week is 3 hrs a day, 3 days a week. (Wouldn’t that be nice), State of the Art machinery help with all the hard labor, and its funny when they break down to see the “oh my goodness, I’m going to have to do the work myself now! Oh no!” The episode “Family Fallout” is a funny one. To sum it up quick, it’s a battle between George Jetson(middle class) and Mr. Spacely(Upper Class and Georges’ Boss) in a game show called Family Fallout. The Jetson family, being a lower class than the Spacelys, ends up winning the game because they answer the trivia questions correctly and therefore win the grand prize. George can pick between two prizes, the Galactic Scale grand prize or the special prize hidden behind door number two. George picks the prize hidden, it ends up being a super duper food machine that his wife absolutely loves. Because he picks this prize, the other prize is given to Spacelys’. Ironically, it’s a lifetime supply of Cogwells Cogs, Mr. Spacelys’ biggest competitor. This should be interesting to notice all the political hoop-blah that goes on.

One in-particular quote Mr. Spacely says about George Jetson is "George Jetson is the perfect employee. He's trustworthy, loyal, and most of all...killable!"

How Do I Leave My Class Bubble?

While looking for a job, the situation is not uncommon where knowing “the right person” may be considered as a catalyst for success. Suppose you have graduated fresh out of college and are looking for your first job. Or, perhaps, you never went to college, and, after being laid off, you are seeking yet another entry level position (a terrible situation, all the way round). In either of these cases, the difficulty of your job search is often dependent upon who you know. A single link may be the difference between a new job at Google or yet another year working at McDonald's some restaurant (a pretty big difference, if I may say so). However, while all of this talk of networking is fine and dandy, how does it happen in the first place? That is, how do people of varying social classes bridge their differences, in order to build such professional (or unprofessional) relationships? I find such questions quite interesting.

While in high school, I still recall many of my experiences at an internship I held. At this position, I maintained various roles as an assistant to an office administrator. From answering phones to filing customer documents, I was given an early glimpse of how business always requires a key component: human interaction.

And, after eventually starting my own business (mind you, it was a humble, one-person operation in web design), I became even more aware of the importance of networking (sales are very slow if you don't talk to anyone!). However, as I entered college, I realized that networking doesn't stop with business, it is just as important in academia.

Speaking outside your social circles expands possibilities (not to mention, if anything, friendships), and it is this perspective which makes me curious to research factors which allow (or disallow) you to obtain acceptance by members of other social classes.

Different education between America and China

As an international student, maybe I don’t know politics or social class in America, but I really experienced the difference of education between China and America. As we all know, the gap between the poor and the rich is one of the most serious problems in the world. In china, parents’ different incomes cause children accept different elementary and secondary education. For example, if my parents have no money to pay for my tuition in elementary and secondary schools, I will have no school to go. Although in China, we are carrying a nine-year compulsory education movement, it still have no school would accept a student with no money. However, in my opinion, this situation would never happen in USA.

On the other hand, Chinese students have better elementary education than American students actually. We really pay more attention on our studies during high school and work very hard to get high scores so we can go to our dream universities. In high school, Chinese students almost spend at least 12 hours on studying textbook or doing exercises. This is the reason why Chinese students are always better in exams instead of practicing.

And the last distinction and the reason that I chose American university is that American universities have more advanced technology and more rigorous academic environment. Although students get strict training and really can learn some academic knowledge, it’s totally different in Chinese universities. Almost every freshman is crazy at university and every university is like a party school. No homework, no quiz, and even no midterm in Chinese university. You just need to get 60 scores on the final exam of every class. Congratulations, you can graduate.

Why would any person work at McDonalds?

I have chosen this topic as my primary text because I have had the opportunity to work there. I worked for McDonald’s last year for two months. McDonald was a job that I found during desperate needs. It was hard for me to find any job during my first year here in the U.S. While I was working, I had a chance to observe the working environment and the customers. From my personal experience, I can explain why any person would work at McDonalds. Most of the people who work at McDonald at the time when I was working were high school graduate or high school drop outs. Many adults who do not further their education by going to college tends to end up working at McDonalds or any other fast food restaurants. However, some management positions at McDonald’s or any fast food restaurants require high school diploma or college degree. Some adults who have been with McDonald’s for a very long time do not want to leave their current position to find another job because their pay rate has gone up for them. Majority of the employees are foreigners who migrated to the U.S. for better life. Most foreigners come to the U.S. where they cannot afford to go to school. Since they have many responsibilities that they have to accomplish, foreign adults jump into whatever job that is available to them. Others who are born and raised here and work at McDonald’s are those who did not take advantage of the opportunities that is available to them as far as education or they may have made wrong choices that jeopardized their financial, social, and individual status.

My goal in English 110

My goal in English 110 is to improve my writing skills. English being my second language, this class should be a challenge that I have to overcome. This class will give me a chance to analyze things and writing in my own way. I believe if I work hard and do my assignment on time I will improve my skill of writing as well as my computer skills.

Few things about me.

My name is Jida Hubana and I'm from Ethiopia. I came to the United States in January 2010. I'm a tranfer student from Mekelle University. I'm on my second quarter here at OSU. My major is Biochemistry. Some of my hoppies that enjoy are playing soccer, tennis, and reading.

My Investment in Social Class in Society

First off I believe I fall into lower middle class, I make enough money to pay my bills, take care of my wife and daughter, and still have enough to enjoy pretty much whatever I'd like, granted I do not work for a living, but I did. I was injured while in the line of duty, so i receive compensation. My wife make a decent wage and together we are pretty good. I've made sure to pay off all credit cards, no car payment, no debt. I think that's where the upper class can get you by the balls, as soon as you get into debt with the upper class, it's very hard to get out. So you pay more and more, and they earn more and more. Capitalism has crippled a lot of Americans. There are those out there that work very hard for what they have and also give back to their community and help those that need it. I wish everyone had the mentality of spreading the wealth. Maybe then we could kick start our economy and get back on the right track. I guess you can say my investment is earning my degree at my age to get back at the man. I'm so sick of the government not caring about people that really need help with health care or employment. But what can I do? I feel like an ant, looking up at someone, yelling DON'T STEP ON ME!! But they can't hear me. What do you do?????

Ryan VanBuskirk

I would like to learn as much as possible to excel in writing and speaking

I am 29 years old and live here in Columbus, Ohio; I am originally from Kenton Ohio. I think its pretty cool that I’m actually going to college now and I’m the first in my family to do so. I am married to a beautiful woman named Jamie, who is also from Ohio, my home town. I have a 2 year old daughter that is a lot smarter than I am. Her name is Marlee Jeanette VanBuskirk named after reggae legend Bob Marley. I have a lot of hobbies and interests which include playing the guitar, also playing Magic The Gathering, any fun video games(I can be a real critic at those) and watching movies. I love to play with my daughter because she makes me feel younger.

Matthew: Something About Me

Goals
For this writing course, I am striving to become a much better writer.  Specifically, I am trying to overcome some crazy kind of “writer’s block” syndrome that turns any writing assignment into an impossible mission only the A-Team could resolve.
Personal Introduction
In roughly a hundred words, I would consider myself to be some weird form of a cross between an engineering major and some far-flung humanities major (don’t know which).  This, perhaps, is one of the reasons I have presently taken an interest with artificial intelligence - due to the interdisciplinary nature of the field of A.I.
I thoroughly enjoy asking random questions and meeting new people (or the combination is good, too).  I tend to daydream a lot; but, fortunately, my interest in having meaningful conversation (though, what is not meaningful?) with people tends to bring my mind back to reality.
